WHITTIER – Oltmans Construction Co. has been ranked among the top third of California general contractors based on 2007 volume.

In rankings compiled by California Construction magazine, Oltmans came placed 22nd among 71 contractors. In 2007, the commercial and industrial construction company had a reported revenue of $340million.

“(The ranking is) a tribute to the people who comprise the team,” said Oltmans Vice President Gerald Singh. “That’s everybody from pre-construction to project management, administrative support staff and the preparation and implementation that takes place in the field.”

The Whittier-based construction company has been in business for 76 years, which contributes to the company’s stability.

“We’ve been fortunate to have a good client base,” Singh said. “We build relationships, that’s what we do.”

J.O. Oltmans founded the business in 1932. It has been run by three generations of Oltmans. Today, the board chairman and CEO is Joseph Oltmans II, the founder’s grandson.

The largest project the company completed last year was the $23.7 million Haven Park office complex in Rancho Cucamonga.

Also in 2007, Oltmans began construction on the Stater Bros. perishables building in San Bernardino.

“That’s the biggest project in the history of the company as far as size and scope,” Singh said.

Over the years, the construction industry as a whole has been supported by what once was a strong economy.

“We are all concerned with respect to the economy, but it’s business as usual for us,” Singh said. “We’ve been here 76 years and we plan to continue on. There are transitions in the economy, and we are prepared.”

Oltmans’ volume has remained consistent over the past few years, and the company forecasts similar figures for this year, Singh said.

In February, Oltmans was given another distinction, this time from the Los Angeles Business Journal. That publication named Oltmans the top industrial contractor in Los Angeles County.

“That was honor,” Singh said. “It was the first time they had done it.”

Other Oltmans-built facilities include: the Herzog Winery in Oxnard, the Pacific Sunwear headquarters in Anaheim and Gateway Pointe Industrial Park in Whittier.

With offices in Whittier and Thousand Oaks, Oltmans employs about 100 administrative people and about 300 workers in the field.
